About Us
Montpellier Clocks was established in 1958 and became members of the British Antique Dealers' Association in 1968. We have been dealing in fine antique clocks from our showrooms in Montpellier, Cheltenham for over 25 years. During this time we have built an excellent worldwide reputation in dealing and restoring fine antique clocks.
Today Montpellier Clocks is owned and run by Tobias Birch who joined his grandfather, Burton Bass, in 1990 after graduating from the world renown West Dean College. At the age of nineteen he was the youngest student at that time to be awarded a Distinction in the Conservation and Restoration of Antique Clocks. Shortly after he graduated the well known clock collector Samuel Messer asked if he would care for his clocks, this included the famous Barnard Tompion along with five others by Thomas Tompion. He has had the privilege of restoring some of the worlds finest clocks and is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.
The clocks we offer for sale have been chosen for their authenticity and quality. Our clocks are mainly English from the 17th century to the 19th century, and consist of longcase clocks, bracket clocks, mantel clocks, regulators, marine chronometers and carriage clocks, we also stock barometers.
If you choose to buy clocks from outside our own stock, we will act on your behalf, whether you are a private collector, interior designer, museum or institution. We can advise on every aspect of sourcing, buying, selling and maintaining fine antique clocks.
Our stock has included clocks by the great makers, E.J. Dent, Edward East, John Ellicott, William Dutton, Charles Frodsham, George Graham, Henry Hindley, Joseph Knibb, John Shelton, Thomas Tompion, Vulliamy, Thomas Mudge, Joseph Windmills and Whitehurst.
All our clocks are sympathetically restored, where necessary, to the highest standard by highly qualified clockmakers and cabinetmakers. For the restoration of clock movements we have our own workshops, fully equipped with traditional hand tools and precision Swiss made machinery. In addition to our own work we also undertake work for museums and private collectors, conservation reports can be provided giving full details of the work including materials and techniques used.
If we can help you in the purchase, sale or repair of an antique clock please do not hesitate to contact us.
